Freshened 2016 Nissan Altima Breaks Cover

Freshened 2016 Nissan Altima Breaks Cover

Nissan has given its bread-and-butter midsized Altima sedan a significant midlife freshening. The update brings styling cues in line with the new Maxima and Murano, while expanding advanced safety equipment offerings and promising a quieter cabin.

The most apparent change is the exterior, where the Altima is now wrapped in more flowing bodywork and finished with a trapezoidal grille, granting it more familial and mature look. In the process, the automaker claims a notable improvement in aerodynamic efficiency.

Inside, the NissanConnect infotainment system takes center stage, with app integration and driver profiles. The screens will be offered in base 5-inch and uplevel 7-inch configurations. Clever features include remote start via smartphone, hands-free text assistant, emergency call, and stolen vehicle locator. A 4-inch color display in the instrument cluster puts key information right in front of the driver.

Increased noise isolation is aided by additional sound insulation due to use of acoustic glass windshield, new engine mounts, and revised muffler.

The Altima will continue to be offered with a choice of 2.5-liter four-cylinder and 3.5-liter V6 engines. The company states that fuel economy has nudged up, gaining 1 mpg on the highway with each powerplant for 39 mpg and 32 mpg, respectively. With the last-tested four-cylinder Altima, we recorded an impressive 44 mpg on the highway.

The suspension has been revised, with an aim to improve response while preserving ride plushness.

A new Altima SR ratchets up for the performance, with a sport-tuned suspension and abundant trim bits. The SR will be offered with either engine.

On the safety front, the Altima will be offered with forward-collision warning with automatic emergency braking, blind-spot monitor, adaptive cruise control, and rear cross-traffic alert.

Built in Tennessee and Mississippi, the Altima will go on sale this winter.
