Freshened 2016 Honda Accord piles on tech

Freshened 2016 Honda Accord piles on tech

Honda is treating its popular Accord sedan and coupe to a midlife freshening, complete exterior treatments, new infotainment system, and available active safety systems. The tech-laced makeover is well timed, as the Accord will face tougher competition in the year ahead from an all-new Chevrolet Malibu and redesigned Toyota Camry.

The 2016 Accord is visually distinguished by more exterior creases, along with an aluminum hood, LED fog and tail lights, and restyled wheels.

More significantly, the Honda Sensing safety suite is available on all variations, bundling together forward-collision warning with active braking, lane assist with active correction, and active cruise control. All Accords come standard with a multi-angle rearview camera. The Touring trim gains automatic high-beam headlights.

The Accord promises to be among the first cars to come factory equipped with a stereo that is Android Auto and Apple Carplay compatible, enabling deeply integrated smart-phone functionality. Found on EX and higher trims, this system will require recent iterations of the phone operating systems, essentially biasing toward newer phones. Once connected, the car will be able to access popular phone functions such as navigation and Siri. The touch screen will operate in a tablet-like fashion, enabling pinch-to-zoom, tap, and swipe interaction.

Other tweaks to content include remote engine start for EX trim and above; split-fold rear seat expands to more trims; and Touring gains heated rear seats, front and rear parking sensors, and new rain-sensing wipers.

These changes look to make an appealing, high-scoring car even more compelling for 2016.
