2017 Ford Super Duty Pickup Truck Goes Aluminum

2017 Ford Super Duty Pickup Truck Goes Aluminum

Ford has unveiled its latest gladiator, the 2017 Super Duty pickup truck, destined to do battle in the hotly contested, full-sized bragfest late next year. Like the all-new F-150 before it, the Super Duty sticks close to its popular formula and arms itself with aluminum and high-strength steel.

The behemoth’s backbone is a new, boxed frame comprised almost entirely of high-strength steel. The result is a foundation said to be 24 times stiffer than the previous frame. Attached to it are four-wheel-drive components, driveline, axles, and towing hardware that Ford says are even heavier duty than before. Yet, through its use of revised materials the new Super Duty is 350 lbs. lighter than last year. Key to this savings is the extensive use of aluminum body hardware.

Powerplant choices are 6.2-liter V8, 6.7-liter Power Stroke V8 diesel, and 6.8-liter V10.

Designed to be easier and safer to operate, the new Super Duty offers an array of high-tech features, such as adaptive steering, adaptive cruise control, blind-spot monitor, lane-departure warning, and up to seven cameras to aid trailer installation and parking. LED lights are available for side mirrors, headlamps, tail lights, and for the cargo box. Plus, the next-generation infotainment system, Sync 3, will be offered.

Ford says each cab configuration—Regular, Super, and Crew—is larger than before, with the two-row cabins benefiting from a flat rear floor. Changes include a dual-compartment glove box and overhead console with auxiliary switches for use with aftermarket gear.

Other notables include BoxLink fasteners to aid in securing cargo in the bed and a remote release for the locking tailgate.

There will be five trim levels when the Super Duty goes on sale late next year, including the XL, XLT, Lariat, King Ranch, and Platinum.
